While the term “Indian” is particularly fraught compared to something like “Native American” or “First Nations”, I think problems arise with the use of any externally-imposed term that’s supposed to signify thousands of distinct groups of people. The bigger issue is the use of a token day of acknowledgement to try to make up for ongoing systemic inequities rooted in centuries of marginalization and outright genocide. I was just trying to use the occasion to make a weak call out of a particular type of cultural appropriation that is disturbingly robust even in supposedly “progressive” circles.
